Plot

Two of the Grimm Universes most dangerous antiheroes face each other for the first time ever in a life or death battle, neither knowing they are just pawns in a bigger game. Who is the puppet master behind the scenes pulling their strings?

My Opinion

Another sure fire hit from Zenescope. This is everything you could possibly want from any kind of ‘vs’ media. Zodiac vs Deathforce is a class of titanic antiheroes that will have you picking sides, questioning morals and motives and recoiling in shock as revelations take place.

Zodiac vs. Deathforce sees the coming together of the two Irish antiheroes after an incident involving insectoid creatures and who is essentially a damsel in distress. Zodiac saves the damsel but is struggling to hold back the horde of bugs and that’s when Deathforce notices the ongoing struggle and enters the fray with what is quite possibly the greatest entry into a fight that I have ever seen in a comic. Deathforce quite literally begins to siphon the life force from the bugs…this is the beginning of serious problems. Deathforce becomes under the control of the lord of the flies and begins to do his bidding, including attempting to destroy Zodiac. I’ll let you read and see what happens next. Trust me when I say it is well worth it.

Jay Sandlin once again delivers the goods as he always does with his, in my opinion, best comic to date. Jay always has exceptional storytelling and one of my favourite aspects of his talent is the recapping of characters' previous stories and their backgrounds, even if brief. It gives readers a level of understanding if, like me, they had missed any previous stories involving the characters. The way Jay approached the dividing of panels between the two main characters was exceptional, both had the correct amount of panel time and not once did it seem like one character's comic and the other was simply just piggybacking on it. I adored the way Jay integrated the descriptions of each character's weapons and abilities into the panels. It was great to see a vast array of weaponry and abilities on display. l was really fascinated by the grail infused armour of Zodiac and the life force absorption talents of Deathforce.

The artistic team have done a properly stellar job with this comic. I’m not overly experienced with the art of Alessandro Uezu & Gabriel Rearte but I know Babisu Kourtis’s work from his Robyn Hood comics from Zenescope. All the art team, including colourists and letterers have created an exceptionally beautiful comic. The characters are distinguished and individually presented with brilliant detail and vibrant colours. I thought that the presentation of the letters was incredible, from the flies with all the z’s to the tremor effect on Deathforce’s speech.

Zodiac vs. Deathforce is a must own comic from a superb creative team and exceptional publisher. Not only because of it’s hard hitting action and super powered characters but down to its outstanding story and fantastic twists. I need more Zodiac and Deathforce in my life, especially their double up stories!
