Six friends get together during lockdown for their weekly zoom call. It's Haley’s turn to organise an activity and instead of a quiz, she’s arranged for a Medium to conduct a
séance. Bored and feeling mischievous, Jemma decides to have some fun and invents a story about a boy in her school who hanged himself. However, her prank gives license for a demonic presence to cross over, taking on the guise of the boy in Jemma’s made-up story. The friends begin noticing strange occurrences in their homes as the evil presence begins to make itself known, and they soon realise that they might not survive the night.
I had really high hopes for this movie. I have seen numerous positive reviews, some
saying that it makes paranormal activity look tame. This was not the case. Instead for me this was a mediocre attempt at a jump scare horror with predictable scares and scenes of poor effects.
I will say that this movie is filmed entirely on zoom and for that I give it major credit. The idea is unique and the zoom aspect is delivered brilliantly. The cast do a good job of making the entire situation believable albeit predictable. Most of the jump scares were delivered well and I was caught out once or twice, however the effects of the spirit really leave something to be desired.
At a runtime of 57 minutes I did feel that the movie could have been extended by about 20 minutes in order to build a bit more suspense, at one point the zoom warning saying
‘10 minutes remaining, upgrade your free account’ message popped up and as a result any suspense that was building was utterly destroyed.
Overall I would say that Host is worth a watch if you have an hour to spare. A great idea which is delivered fairly well by the entire cast but suffers from a low budget, simple effects and a short runtime.
