Of all the enemies Thorgal has faced in his life, Kriss of Valnor is by far the fiercest. She is also one of the most ambiguous, as the mother of one of his children and someone who has committed countless unspeakable acts. Can she find redemption? Perhaps, as Kriss sacrificed herself to save not only her son Aniel, but also Thorgal’s wife Aaricia. An act of selfless bravery for which she’s rewarded with waking up in the kingdom of the gods. But Valhalla is not quite yet hers… She is brought before the valkyries to face up to her deeds and have her life judged by the goddess Freyja.
First off let me say that I haven’t any of the ‘The World of Thorgal' comics before, this is my first adventure into this world thanks to the brilliant people at Europe Comics. I’m really glad I took a chance on Kriss of Valnor. Kriss is an utterly brilliant character with an incredible amount of depth and mystery surrounding her. Not to mention the intense levels of anger that reside in her and that are repeatedly displayed throughout the story.
This story, ‘I forget Nothing!’ introduces Kriss to us in a hugely impactful way, we instantly get an understanding into the reasons behind the character traits.
In the opening scenes we see Kriss as an adult in the Hall of the Valkyries after her apparent death, she’s there to be judged ready to fight for Odin at the end of the world, Ragnarok. Before that, Freyja needed more information so that she could pass correct judgement. This takes us back to the start of Kriss’ story, when she is a child struggling under the persecution of horrible men. Don’t worry, Kriss get’s her own back.
Yves Sente delivers a fantastic set up story to keep you attached to Kriss, I will be looking into more editions of Kriss of Valnor as a result of Yves excellent storytelling. Again, with my adventure with Europe Comics I am coming across writers and artists I've never seen before so I am really enjoying reading something new!
The art in Kriss of Valnor is reminiscent of old school comics, it’s nostalgic and gorgeous. I’m a big fan of this style and it made my read incredibly enjoyable.
I'm excited to continue reading Kriss’ story in the next installment and think you should all give this story a try, it’s well worth it.
